For the purpose of applying for a visa, a hold ticket, also known as a flight reservation or dummy ticket, is a reservation for a return flight. Because it isn't paid for, unlike airline tickets, it is known as a hold ticket. You can apply and wait for your visa grant confirmation before paying for your air ticket because once you've gotten a hold ticket for your flights, the reservation is often held in your name for a few weeks. 

Hold tickets give consulates and embassies all the information they require to handle your visa application.

Your flight reservation or hold ticket will consist of:

• Avoid scams by acting locally or paying with PayPal
• Never pay with Western Union, Moneygram or other anonymous payment services
• Don't buy or sell outside of your country. Don't accept cashier cheques from outside your country
