This dissertation addresses feminist viewpoints on the literary canon and the subversion of gender norms in Japanese literature, as well as gender and identity in Japanese adaptations of English literature. This study intends to add to the current scholarship on global literary exchange and cultural translation by conducting a critical and comparative analysis of a variety of literary works, including classics and contemporary adaptations.
