The most reliable experimental model for normal and abnormal skin physiology is ex vivo skin explants. In addition to fibroblasts, collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans in the dermal matrix, this model also contains keratinocytes, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells. Ex vivo skin model sections highlight the potential use of human belly hAec models and hSec models to study the physiology of the dermis and epidermis, the immune response, skin permeability, and the effects of sun exposure on human skin and scalp.
