The hindgut ulcers refer to the section of a horse's intestines that follows the small intestine. The ulceration is commonly found in the right dorsal colon. The signs of hindgut ulcers in horses are Girthy, Resistance under saddle, Sensitivities in the flank region, Bending, collecting, and extending difficulties, diarrhea, laminitis etc.
Treatment
Omeprazole is the approved ‘proton pump inhibitor’ (PPI) which controls gastric acid secretion. Sucralfate is a medication that is used to treat the hindgut. It works by attaching to the mucosal lining of the colon, which helps protect from further injury. Treating ulcers in horses with sucralfate and a probiotic will help restore good bacteria in the horses gut and aid digestion.
