Throughout the summer of the 2019 our Bavaria 39 Tessa Jane began producing black tire out smoke and suffering a cut of power from her 2006 Volvo Penta MD2030. Initial investigations covered the usual suspects such as gas issues, blocked exhaust elbow etc, which resulted in the fitting on the shiny new stainless-steel wear elbow.
But I was struggling to isolate the exact induce before our annual cruise across the Channel Islands and upper France, so we merely kept the revs low while motoring and loved our holiday.
However, even though motor-sailing from St Peter Vent to Cherbourg, the smell of unburnt diesel increased and just a few miles from the west entrance towards the harbour we started emitting rather a group of white smoke.
We limped into Chantereyne marina and were luckily able to berth on the hammerhead, which reduced the amount of time manoeuvring under energy and kept the white smoke to a minimum. We obviously was required to address this tout-suite consequently cancelled our plans to carry on onto St-Vaast-la-Hougue and set about investigating a possible defective or blocked injector.
Wonder breakage
I successfully pulled the front two injectors (of the particular three), but the aft-most just one was surprisingly loose. Diesel injectors should be fitted with relatively large torque, so when I set to removing the retaining nut for your fuel leak-off pipe attached to the rear cylinder, I used to be genuinely surprised to see the complete injector rotate as good. Inevitably, the result of the rotation was that the actual brass leak-off pipe out of cash.
With the three injectors just about all pulled, a quick inspection of their ports highlighted that the rear injector port seemed to be completely blocked with carbon build-up, and I attributed the source to the loose injector. We also noted that there seemed to be a lump of something that appeared as if calcified carbon still moderately blocking the injector port, but this proved impossible to remove.
I cleaned the backed injector port, and made a temporary repair to the fuel pipe using JB Weld just before reassembling the system. The engine test confirmed most of us had, at least, ceased the billowing white smoke cigars.
Due to a loss of brazing equipment on aboard, which could have been utilized to affect a more permanent repair on the leak-off pipe, I decided to visit several local garages and workshops to check out if anyone could fashion some kind of repair for me. Sadly, I was out involving luck.
Plan B therefore was to make use of the Volvo Penta Motion Service (VPAS) to source an aftermarket part. This was now Friday afternoon ahead of the August bank holiday and also we had crew joining us around the following Tuesday ready for a sail back across this Channel. VPAS were a big bonus with identifying the suitable part number, locating the local dealer, dealing together with translation challenges, and getting them to offer it right to the marina for the Monday. However, I ended up having to pay 200 Euros for a part you can get online in the GREAT BRITAIN for £50.
With the replacement fuel pickup installed and wine beverage stocks replenished we appreciated a lovely sail back through the channel stopping overnight inside Yarmouth, before continuing on to Portsmouth. Engine power appeared to be still slightly reduced, but there was no billowing white smoke a pipe.
I knew I’d really need to remove the cylinder head to be able to identify the foreign object inside rear cylinder injector opening, and as the boat would be moving to her cold months home in October, we enjoyed a great deal of weekends in the Solent not having incident.
