The most common types of ulcers in horses are gastric ulcers and hindgut ulcers. In the horse, gastric ulcers are found in the stomach, while hindgut ulcers are found in the colon and cecum, also called colonic ulcers.
In most cases, the symptoms of both ulcers are the same, so an endoscope of the stomach will be helpful in diagnosing type of ulcer.
It's important to know that both gastric and hindgut ulcers are treated differently with different medications. For gastric ulcers, Omeprazole is the best medication, while for hindgut ulcers, Sucralfate is used.
