Diablo Immortal doesn't cost anything to play Diablo 4 Items, although after the first couple of hours, I was wanting it to. I would have much rather paying a one-time flat cost to play the game entirely at my own pace and not being constantly bombarded by (surprisingly costly) microtransactions every time I played. Diablo Immortal is by no not as bad as free to play games can get, but every single F2P mechanic serves to hinder the game, rather than improve it.
The first thing to note is that there's no requirement to pay the cost of Diablo Immortal when you're not in the mood to. You'll still be able play the entire story as well as find plenty of loot, and engage in all the activities. In the initial 20-30 character levels it's possible that you won't be aware of the things you're missing.
But a few hours into playing, the pace slows considerably, and the F2P grind takes over. (This occurs around the same time that you start to feel genuinely invested in the game. Just imagine that.) As opposed to the regular Diablo titles, Diablo Immortal occasionally just stop the story dead in its tracks , and will not let you proceed unless you meet an arbitrary level threshold. That's not so bad but the game seriously limits the ways you can gain significant amounts of XP each day. After a few short time-limited missions and dungeons, the choices are pretty all "run identical dungeons and over" and "buy Battle Pass Diablo 4 Boosting." Battle Pass."
