World Veterinary Day is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of April to recognize the contribution of veterinarians to society and to promote the importance of animal health and welfare. The day was first observed in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) to coincide with the birthday of Louis Pasteur, the French microbiologist and chemist who developed the first rabies vaccine.
