General Bipin Rawat was the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India, a position created in 2019 to enhance the coordination between the three branches of the Indian armed forces – the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He was appointed to the post on 31st December 2019 and assumed office on 1st January 2020. As the CDS, he was tasked with the responsibility of transforming the Indian military into a modern and technologically advanced force, capable of meeting the complex security challenges of the 21st century.
